Create a New Student Organization

Emerson students thrive on bringing their vision to life and Student Engagement and Leadership is here to help you bring your student organization vision to life.

The primary purpose of reaching registered status (Tier 1) as a student organization is to permit the use of Emerson's name, access to additional college-owned facilities, receive funding from the Student Government Association, and other special privileges. Please review SEAL's Interest Group Policy for more information about the privileges of each Tier.

SEAL can assist in the creation of a new student organization, constitution, goals and more. Students who are interested in creating a student organization org must become an Interest Group (Tier 2) first. Once established, an organization can begin the student organization registration process. To become registered, a student organization must have a full-time faculty/staff advisor, three leaders (President/Vice President/Treasurer or equivalent) an additional five active members, a working constitution, and evidence of activity for at least one semester.

Creating a New Student Organization

To begin the process of creating a new student organization, students must first create their EmConnect page. To create the page, students should click the "Groups" tab at the top of the page and select "All Groups" - there they will find a button at the top of the page that says "Register New Interest Group Organization".

Once that form is completed, a member from the SEAL team will reach out to meet with the student before approving the group creation.

After being approved as an Interest Group Organization, students can then manage their EmConnect page as officers - posting events, sending newsletters, recruiting new members, and more.

What to prepare before submitting your new Interest Group request:

  • Check that your organization is unique and that a similar group does not already exist
  • Names of at least three officers for your executive board (president and treasurers are required)
  • Identify a full-time faculty or staff member to serve as your advisor
  • A list of at least five additional general members
  • Mission statement and goals - what is the purpose of your organization?
  • Member benefits - what benefits do your members get by participating in your organization?
